Sat PCC -- MASSIVE!!!‏

Helped Mara and Paul unload their very, very overly-full suburban (with more left behind at the store for me to pickup tomorrow).

I am slightly worried that I may not be able to pick everything up tomorrow; Mara and Paul thought I may need an extra driver -- Any one interested in training for the Edmonds PCC tomorrow at about 2:30?

Thankfulness!

When I shared out our abundance of Little Ceasar's Pizza today everyone was so grateful! I thought maybe the whole team should know that we shared them with the Monroe Boys and Girls Club, Cacoon House and the Women's Shelter on Lewis. They were all surprised and very happy to receive the pizzas.

Thanks!

1/2 Price Books

The books are in the old shed. 1/2 Price Books underwent a remodel so all the books were catagorized in boxes.

There were about 5 boxes of cookbooks. Because of limited shelf space they were left in the boxes and are labeled.

They are on the left side of the shed.

1 box of books about wine and wine making.

1 box of books about gardening.

More that I can't remember.

The new music CDs are on the top shelf of the white table in the bread room of the trailer.

There were a few new movies and they have been put on the bookcase in the bread room.

The shed has been painted and it would be wonderful to have shelving along the walls of the old shed. . .anyone who would like to participate with materials or labor could let Deana or I know. It would give us a lot more space to utilize. The bookcase we have works for some of the books but takes up a lot of floor space.

Hope to see all of you at the meeting on Saturday!

PCC Saturday

Hi gang,

We have a lot of peaches and nectarines! Some are for out of hand eating, but there is a case and some are soft, not moldy, but ready for some one (or several!) to take a supply for jam, pie, syrup, etc. Here today (Sunday), but will be moved out by Sunday evening to avoid fruit flies.

Furthermore, on the freshly gleaned items: there is a box of loose leaf treasures to be picked from – dirty, yes, but field fresh!

Moving on:

Apples, raspberries, cantaloupe, mangos, plums, kiwi, avocados (soft for guac.), herbs, spinach, bananas, potatoes, and celerye.

Breads, pastries, cookies, cakes, pies, scones, muffins, cupcakes.

Few dips. No diary or deli to speak of today.

Oh! And quite a few tomatoes! - Pasta sauce – salsa….

Again! Parsnips – lots! Think stew…

And would someone please let me know when the new book run comes in so I can come peruse?

Thanks!

Erin

Erin

Artisian Bread to French Toast with Blueberry Syrup.

For this recipe I used PCC's Volkorn Bread. It's a lovely braided loaf, very hearty and filled with seeds and other goodies. It made great croutons, good crumbs for meatloaf and think it would make awesome grilled sandwiches. I'll test that out next time we get a loaf...

French Toast Recipe from America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook

8 slices bread (I actually used almost the whole loaf, sliced 1/2 inch or so...)

whisk together
2 Tablespoons melted butter
1 cup milk
1 large egg
2 Tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon

slowly whisk in
1/2 cup flour

Melt about 1 Tablespoon of butter in a skillet,

cook in melted butter over medium heat until golden brown.

(Well... mine turned out too dark, but nobody complained!)

Cheater's Blueberry Syrup

Heat 1/2 cup maple syrup to a boil, add handful of frozen berries.

Boil for a minute, or until berries start to soften and burst. Blend. Or leave it with whole berries.

Drench your amazing french toast with more butter and blueberry syrup.

Or just syrup.

Either way - Yum.

carrots
yams
sprouts
figs
pears
watermelon
orange juice
corn bread squares
cakes
cupcakes

quinoa salad
Muffella olive spread

Calendar Posted

I've added a page for the calendar; just click the link to the RIGHT.
It's under the heading "GLEANER INFORMATION"
the one that says "calendar" .
Now we can check on when a run is scheduled to come in.

FUN!

I plan to also have a page that will have some job responsibilities -
and some common gleaner terms defined...

What is a driver expected to do?
What does a cleaner need to clean?
Who is in charge of sharing?
What is a RUN?

I could post the roster, but I don't want my info floating out in cyberspace... Do you guys want a roster online, or is an emailed roster enough?

Maybe I might throw some more recipes up there... Just for fun.
Are there any other items our blog should address?
Thanks for your input,
Alyce

I'm SO DONE with those rats!
Anita and I boxed up the bread from her orowheat run today and decide to put the boxes into the new "shed" (WHat SHALL we name the new behemoth?! -- Site?, continue with 'Shed'?, Trailer, Bertha?, Food-shack?... I'm taking votes) :)

The new site needs a good cleaning before we get on to using it; I'm just so darn tired of supporting the luxurious lifestyle that these varmints are used to that it felt good to deny them the new load! Is there anyone who can help start the process of getting the new place clean and ready to move into? I'm very anxious; I want to keep on denying the rats fresh food! We'll need to start the cleaning one thing at a time: Walls first, shelves next and floors final. If you can help get this new place sparkling please contact Lara Erickson.

So, don't forget to share out any of the bread from yesterday's run (in boxes in shed) and to look for the new bread in the "____new name here___". I'll be loading (or any of you) any of the extra orowheat bread into the freezer once it's been shopped from. If someone wants to start a list of breads they'd like to see in the freezer on a regular basis, please be my guest :) Post it on the freezer or add your vote to the list for what we should keep in the freezer.

Thanks everyone! ~Deana

Food Waste = Pork Video.

This "urban farmer" Novella Carpenter is taking waste food in Oakland California and using it to feed her farm animals. She ocassially uses strong language, but the concept was cool enough to share the video!

PCC Pastries Question

**I took the bulk pastries and put them into reasonably sized proportions and bagged them. I think this is a great way for them to be used. I'm going to suggest that everyone take a moment and consider whether the bags I used be added to the supply donations made by all the members. It will tell me if I should continue to take the time to bag them up for the group. It did take a lot of time -- Should I continue this or move the bulk pastries on to a donation place?

Leftovers. Use it up.

Once we get our rescued goods from the shed, it seems like a crime to let them go to waste. I love creative ways to use leftovers or surplus. Usually it's soup.
This week I've made strawberry vanilla bean jam, strawberry rhubarb pie and rosemary rhubarb jelly. YUM-town.
I also saw an inspiring post with some great leftover ideas on the Tasty Kitchen Blog. Check out this link to tasty kitchen leftovers ideas.

BOOKS!

Sno- North Team called and they get books from half price books. The question is….do we want some of these books from Sno-north and where will we put them? I told the Manager I would let her know in a day or two so I need response back ASAP.

Thanks,

Kay

Pizza Wanted - Llana

I'm looking for 5 pizza's for my son's b-day party on Wednesday 5/12. I don't know if there will be any runs in the next couple of day's, but I'd love to glean up to 5 pizza's and salad fixings.
Perhaps the pizza people could call me directly if there are pizza's then I'll know to come down right away.

Thank you,

Thursday Run - STRAWBERRIES!

About 10 flats of strawberries came in! YUMMY.
2 boxes of bananas Potatoes, a few personal sized watermelon, some nice button and baby bella mushrooms, apples, herbs, some spinach, jalapeƱos. Bakery stuff. Bread, bagels, pitas. A few tasty looking scones from star-bucks.
And Quite a lot of roma tomatoes.

Have a great day.

Mmmm.... Use the CAKES in the freezer.

Lets use those sweets and treats!

Email from Deana :

We need to move out the pies and cakes from the freezer to make room for this and the next friday's bread runs; the freezer would serve better having bread in it than these sweets. Once we have our management team established I would be contacting the Outreach manager about this, but at the moment I don't think we have one. Posting it on the blog might be better, or maybe an e-mail... I don't know. I just don't want to compost them, I'd rather they get shared out - ASAP :)

Hi All,

My daughter is turning 3 on May 7th. We are having a family party on May 9th and I need to provide cake for 16 people.

If anyone drops off a sheet, 1/2 sheet, or 1/4 sheet cake can you please let me know? Any flavor combo is just fine.

I really appreciate it.

Thank you very much,

Jennifer

Sample Update

This is our BLOG.

If I receive a quick email with details of the contents of each run, I can re-post them right HERE. They will be updated daily. Newest posts will appear at the top. The older information will be archived by month. Then you can all check in whenever you are interested, or on you way to the shed. Any posts will also have one or more "labels" assigned to them, which you can help you find post regarding a specific topic.

We can also post other interesting information here... I'll throw up a couple sample links on the sidebar to the right.

I'm really excited to be able to have the information available to everybody. And to know if a stop by the shed before grocery shopping is worth the trip. It will save our family time, gas, and money.

If you would like to give me some feedback on anything, please leave a comment.

More information to come.
